Of course, as a jeweler, he had bought or sold something from his jewels or my mother’s, or the watches he had brought from France. He had brought a suitcase of watches from France. It wasn’t speculation, but they sentenced my father to three years.

Let him go to Egypt where the government will pay for his education.” My mother said, “No, I will take him to the homeland.” And, thank god, I am content that my mother brought me. I’m sincere. I remember, they didn’t know how to speak Armenian and were dressed as Kurds. They comported themselves as Christian Kurds, but deep down they were Armenians. They knew they were Armenian. And they came to Beirut and repatriated. It was very moving. A few had even brought horses. These people went to Armenia and became Armenian.

Besides, you can attend college in Yerevan when all higher education is free.” So, even though Aunt Lusaber had assured me that if there had been any possible cure for Father’s eyesight, it would have been known in the States, I felt I could not shatter Father’s last hope of recovering his eyesight. With a heavy heart, I began to participate in the preparation for our move.
