Ս․թ․ ապրիլի 12-ին Գեղարքունիքի մարզի Արեգունի համայնքում տեղի ունեցավ Արեգունի, Փամբակ և Գեղամասար համայնքների կոոպերատիվների անդամների և հետաքրքրված ֆերմերների համար դասընթաց «Ջերմատնային պայմաններում զարգացող հիմնական հիվանդությունների և վնասատուների դեմ պայքարի աշխատանքների կազմակերպում» թեմայով։ Շենի գյուղատնտես-փորձագետը ներկայացրեց ջերմատներում առավել տարածված վնասատուների և հիվանդությունների դեմ կիրառվող  բույսերի պաշտպանության ժամանակակից միջոցները:

On April 12, within the framework of the "Integrated Support for Sustainable Economic Development in Rural Mountainous Areas of Armenia" project a seminar on "Organization of pest management measures in greenhouse conditions" was conducted in Areguni community for the members of the community cooperatives and interested farmers from Areguni, Pambak and Geghamasar villages. Shen's agronomist-expert presented the most up-to-date plant protection measures against pests and diseases in greenhouses. Particularly chemical, biological and organic pesticides have been presented. At the end of the seminar 16 attended farmers received info materials on delivered topics.

L’ONG Shen favorise également le développement de l’agriculture conventionnelle dans les régions d’Arménie où l’agriculture biologique n’est pas réalisable, tout en mettant l’accent sur la culture des produits de grande valeur – fruits, légumes et céréales de grande valeur. A cet égard, Shen a géré plusieurs chaînes de valeurs, dont l’abricot est le plus prometteur dans plusieurs régions d’Arménie. Dans de nombreux cas, la production d'une telle production agricole est un complément aux cultures traditionnelles de faible valeur produites en quantité relativement importants dans la plupart des régions montagneuses du pays, ce qui assure des revenus supplémentaires à ces ménages.

Il avait commencé en 2005 et est considéré comme un bon exemple de durabilité de projet. Une petite entreprise nommée « Univers des fils » a été fondée par nos bénéficiaires et fonctionne avec succès.

Furthermore, in 2013 Shen initiated new projects putting the main emphasis on income generation of rural households through community mobilization, particularly, organisation and development of agricultural cooperatives. It aims mobilizing community members to identify common agriculture problems and find consolidated solutions for the latter. As a first step, Shen promotes creation of simplest community based entities – consumer aka marketing (non for profit) cooperatives (see Berdavan Cooperative in Annual Report 2013).

Shen NGO implemented several projects on development of local tourism. Particularly in 2008 Bed and Breakfast inns were established in Tsapatagh, Shorzha and Pambak villages (at the shore of the Lake Sevan) by local young entrepreneurs who completed our trainings and now successfully operate B&Bs during the summer months. In 2009 upon completion of extensive trainings organised by Shen NGO six more families from the region have got involved in this activity as well. Being encouraged by the positive experience of thier fellow villagers involved in this sector, in 2012 more families applied for and received loans to start hospitality business. Year by year the number of tourists who stay in newly established small inns increases. In 2012 Shen based on capitalised own experience (developed trainings and training modules) as well as AUA research in the field developed and published a manual on Inn Management.

On May 23 and 29 "Integrated Support for Sustainable Economic Development in Rural Mountainous Areas of Armenia" project conducted a practical training on Cultivation Techniques and Peculiarities of the Most Valuable Cultivars Suitable for That Geographic Zone for beneficiary communities of Shaki, Shaghat, Angeghakot, Areguni, Pambak and Geghamasar in Syunik and Vardenis provinces. 27 members participated in the seminar. At the end of the workshop, each cooperative was provided with 100 seedlings of mint (grown in the Institute of Problems of Hydroponics). Cultivation of this variety of mint will allow to expand the list of plants offered by the cooperative, which will result in additional income.

A complementary activity of this project was the introduction of biohumus production which, besides its direct benefits have side effect of keeping the village roads clean. In 12 communities where people are engaged in animal husbandry, Shen organic agriculture extension group organized a training on the production of humus and provided the interested community members with the necessary amount of Californian red worms. After 6 months Shen monitoring group found out that some farmers started to fertilize their apple orchards, and the number of biohumus piles grew. The success of the porject will be replicated in other regions of Armenia.

En 2009, après avoir passé les cours de formation intensive, organisés par l’ONG Shen, encore six familles de la région se sont engagées dans cette activité.  Etant encouragées par l’expérience positive des covillageois, en 2012 d’autres familles ont obtenu des prêts pour commencer leur affaire d’hôtellerie. Le nombre des touristes préférant les maisons d’hôtes nouvellement ouvertes augmente d’année en année. Se basant sur sa propre expérience (cours et modules de formation élaborés) et sur l’étude de l’université américaine en Arménie, en 2012 l’ONG Shen a élaboré et a édité le manuel de "Gestion des maisons d’hôtes".

Une activité complémentaire du projet était l’introduction de la production de biohumus qui, outre ses profits directs, a un autre  effet positif, celui de maintenir la propreté des routes. Dans 12 villages où les gens sont engagés dans l’élevage, le groupe de consultants en agriculture biologique de Shen a organisé un cours de formation de la production de biohumus et a fourni aux personnes intéressées la quantité nécessaire de vers rouges californiens. Six mois après, le groupe de monitoring de Shen a découvert que certains fermiers ont commencé à fertiliser leurs vergers de pommiers, et le nombre d’amas de biohumus a augmenté. Le succès du projet sera reproduit dans d’autres régions d’Arménie.

Shen NGO promotes also development of conventional agriculture in those regions of Armenia where organic agriculture is not feasible yet putting special emphasis on cultivation of high value crops – fruits, vegetables and high value cereals. In this regard Shen conducted several value chains of which apricot is most promising one in many regions of Armenia. In many cases the production of such agriproduce complement more traditional low value crops produced in relatively big volumes in most of mountainous regions of the country thus bringing additional incomes to those households. These projects are implemented also in the communities mostly populated by refugees who have problems of economic integration. Our strategy is to support maximum number of beneficiaries through strengthening the operational value chains where we apply various facilitative approaches. Therefore, we try to promote activities that potentially result in substantial quality agricultural produce providing higher income for the entire community.
