Le rôle du SLNG est de conseiller les Agences des Nations Unies (environ 20) qui le sponsorisent et d'aider les ONG actives auprès des Nation-Unies. Le SLNG finance et facilite également la participation de représentants d'ONG de pays en développement à des conférences des Nations Unies ainsi qu'à d'autres évènements. Le SLNG édite un large éventail de publications, y compris des lettres d'information et de "briefings" a l'intention de toutes les ONG, plus particulièrement pour celles des pays en développement. Le SLNG n'attribue pas de statut consultatif mais toute ONG peut demander à être incluse dans sa base de données et recevoir gratuitement ses publications.

Consultative Status with the UN and its specialised agencies allows NGOs to present their views to the UNICEF Executive Board, and thus to participate in the formulating of policies. NGOs that hold consultative status with UNICEF may participate in meetings, submit written statements and make oral presentations. The NGO Committee on UNICEF, founded by nearly 200 NGOs, interacts closely with the UNICEF Secretariat and acts as a forum for a more effective interface between the organization and NGOs.
