نشأت روث في مدينة نيويورك. وعندما كانت في الثانية عشرة من عمرها، تعرضت للاغتصاب من صديق والدتها. ثم لجأت إلى "صديق أكبر سنا" بحثا عن الحب والأمان. وتبيّن أن هذا "الصديق" قوّاد، أجبر روث على ممارسة الجنس مع الرجال في مقابل المال. وكان يُطلب منها حصص ليلية، وكانت تتعرض للاغتصاب المتكرر والضرب المبرّح. وفي النهاية ألقي القبض على روث. ولكن نظرا لوجود أوجه قصور في قانون مكافحة الاتجار بالجنس بولاية نيويورك بصفة رئيسية، فلم يتعرض قوّادها وعملاؤها الذين كانوا يستخدمونها للمساءلة. وأودعت روث في جيتويز Gateways، وهو برنامج للعلاج الداخلي المكثف تابع للرابطة اليهودية لرعاية الطفل JCCA موجه إلى العناية بالشباب الذين يتعرضون للاستغلال الجنسي التجاري وهو يساعد هؤلاء الشباب على التعرف على الصدمة النفسية التي يعانون منها، ومن ثم إعادة بناء احترامهم لذاتهم، والعودة إلى المجتمع، والانخراط في العيش المنتج والمستقل. وبفضل الدعم الذي لا يصدق والمعاملة المذهلة التي تلقتها روث من هيئة العاملين في جيتويز، فإنها الآن منتظمة في المدرسة وتعيد بناء حياتها التي سُرقت منها.

Unfortunately, due to political grandstanding in Albany, the TVPJA was not passed. However, we are optimistic that the bill will ultimately pass during New York’s next legislative term as there was significant support for it in both the Senate and Assembly. Over the next few months, Equality Now and our partners will strategize on a plan to secure passage of the TVPJA during the next legislative session. Thank you to our thousands of supporters for petitioning the New York legislature in support of this campaign, and we hope we can count on your continued support in 2014.

Toutefois, en raison de démagogie politique au sein de l’Assemblée, la TVPJA n'a malheureusement pas été adoptée. Nous sommes cependant convaincus que le projet de loi, qui dispose d’un appui important à la fois au Sénat et à l'Assemblée, sera enfin adopté lors de la prochaine législature. Au cours des prochains mois, Egalité Maintenant et nos partenaires élaboreront des stratégies visant à garantir le passage de la TVPJA lors de la prochaine session législative. Nous adressons un grand merci aux milliers de sympathisants qui ont soutenu cette campagne et envoyé des pétitions à l’assemblée de New York, et espérons pouvoir à nouveau compter sur votre soutien en 2014.

Lamentablemente, debido al lucimiento político producido en Albany, no se aprobó finalmente la Ley de Justicia y protección de las víctimas del tráfico de personas. Sin embargo, esperamos con optimismo que el proyecto de ley sea aprobado en última instancia en el próximo periodo legislativo de Nueva York ya que ha contado con un importante apoyo tanto en el Senado como en la Asamblea Legislativa. Durante los próximos meses Igualdad Ya y sus socios formularán una estrategia para elaborar un plan que garantice la aprobación de la Ley de Justicia y protección de las víctimas del tráfico de personas durante la próxima sesión legislativa. Agradecemos sinceramente a los miles de personas que nos han apoyado enviando una petición a la asamblea legislativa de Nueva York en favor de la campaña y esperamos poder seguir contando con su ayuda en 2014.
