For two weeks in October the field team of the LIFE+ project "The Return of the Neophron" mapped the dangerous poles in six areas with nests of Egyptian Vultures in Northern Bulgaria. The team went over 3,000 kilometers on the roads in the country to describe every electric pole in the territories of the endangered species. A total of 2900 poles were marked, the total length of the line is more than 200 km.

Up to now a total of 28 pairs of Imperial eagles have taken/occupied their breeding territories and are rebuilding their nests. Two pairs have changed their old nests with new ones. Compared to last year, only in one territory Imperial eagles have not been seen yet. Unfortunately, this is one of the few remaining "mountain" type pairs of Imperial eagles. Their nest has been occupied by a pair of Long-legged buzzards. In this area there is a massive plowing of grassland areas abounding with Ground squirrels and managed as grassland in the recent years. It is possible that the eagles have moved or left the territory.

The winter this year at BSPB Poda Reserve is again not as it should be. It is January already, but we did not experience a snow cover yet, the days are sunny and dry and only the minus temperatures, varying from -1 down to -8 and the yellowish vegetation can be accepted as winter attributes. And the birds, as well, of course! In time from North arrived the Mute, Whooper and Tundra Swans, latest ones - in quite unusual numbers of over 220 individuals! Half a dozen Great Bitterns within the reserve together with over hundred Great Egrets also give some specific winter ‘aftertaste' of the site. The unfrozen open water areas are full of thousands of Pochards, Common Teals, Northern Shovelers, Eurasian Wigeons, Red-crested Pochards and other waterfowl. More careful observers will spot amongst them smaller flocks of Gadwalls and tens of Smews, including white males with pretty black ‘masks'. The local pair of the White-tailed Eagles is ‘on duty' on the nearest hill, often ‘escorted' by a dozen of Common Buzzards or by some of the almost hundred Marsh Harriers, which chose Poda area for both hunting and roosting. But still something is not as it should be... Until the first days of the New 2015 year ‘classic' autumn migration of Common Buzzards and Sparrowhawks took place here. Just for an hour on 1st January 2015 over Sarafovo Estate of Burgas 181 Common Buzzards passed in the typical migration lines, most of which were heading directly over the sea towards Poda! Other ‘non-winter' things happen in the reserve, too. Besides the 3 Squacco Herons, remained at Poda almost until the New Year, there are still four Spoonbills here (one of them with a ring), as well as one Little Egret - birds which should be in warm Africa during this time of the year! And what to say about the almost 120 Night Herons staging near to Poda and every morning and evening flying over the site!
