Denmark was occupied by Germany on 9 April 1940, and the Occupation had an unexpected impact on the building project because the state cancelled its plans to build a new barracks in Århus. This project was actually intended to provide work for the unemployed, so it was decided to build a main building for the university instead. And that’s exactly what happened.

(Hebr. 10, 19-22).

You see, we have absolute access to come into the very presence of the living Creator God — and also for Him to come to us! "Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way... let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith" (Hebrews 10:19—22).

Last week, I visited Kolle 37, an adventure playground in Berlin. I wandered in through a back entrance and had no idea what exactly I had stumbled upon. But I proceded to spend two blissful hours here; eyes wide with wonder and unable to hold back cries of excitement:

Da Danmark blev
befriet

When Denmark was liberated on May 4, 1945, a surge of joy went through Danes both at home and abroad. The over 7,000 Jewish refugees who were in Sweden and the deported Jews, who had been brought home from Theresienstadt in the White Busses, could return home. Soon, however, it became clear that for some of the refugees the return to Denmark was fraught with considerable practical problems and disappointments.

The rise of Islam in Arabia led in 712 CE to the conquest of Catalonia by the Moors. The Islamic forces continued over the Pyrenees into what is now France. There they countered a resistance aided by Charlemagne that ultimately drove them back over the Pyrenees and liberated parts of Catalonia. Those areas were designated by the Carolingian kings as the Marca Hispanica (Spanish March (border)) and Barcelonian counts were put in control of it. Those counts functioned independently and extended the territory under their control.

When artists in the 17th and 18th century began to cast classical sculptures and architectural elements at the academies, these forms where simultaneously liberated from their social and representative context. The forms were studied as autonomous objects and through sketches and drawings after plaster casts one gained insight and knowledge about their shapes and proportions. Thus an autonomous language on sculpture was developed independent of what king or deity the sculptures were originally meant to represent. Thus art was made free as an independent way of knowing. Plaster in the 18th century liberates the reality of form and art, thereby creating the precondition for the modern concept of art.

Whether we think of fisherwomen knitting in the dunes or of men mending nets at the harbour, handiworks long played an important role in life at the seaside. With industrialisation, handicraft lost its original function as a livelihood, yet at the same time took hold as a middle-class leisure activity. In the 1970s and 1980s, artists such as Rosemarie Trockel and Alighiero e Boetti rid needlework of its reputation as a wholesome activity for women through subversive and political works. And handicraft is experiencing an on-going renaissance in the art of today as well. Central to this revival is the transgression of social und art historical conventions. Abstract or representational, art or craft, female or male – not exclusively textile-based, the practices presented in this exhibition subvert those categories and reveal new relationships.
