KKR klart gavnet enormt fra junk bond mania i 1980erne. Købere hældes $18 milliarder i junk bond marked fra 1986 til 1988. Imidlertid svagere og svagere bond tilbud blev tegnet. Rented�kning ,forholdet af driftsoverskuddet som renter, er et mål for riskiness af lånefinansiering. Før junk bond-æra i forholdet 6 til 1 blev betragtet som normale. I begyndelsen af det junk bond-æra forholdet i række 2 til 1 blev anset for risikabelt. Nær slutningen af markedet skulle købe obligationer i virksomheder med interesse dækningsgraden i området 0,75. Det betyder, at selskabet ikke kunne opfylde sin gæld betalinger ud over indtjeningen. Andelen af cash flow, som omfatter afskrivninger samt aktuelle indtjening, at renterne var i række 1,25 til 1. Det junk bond tilbud begyndte at stole på opsparing i obligationer i stedet for kontant. Dette er blot en skjult måde at udskyde betaling af renter. KKR clearly benefited tremendously from the junk bond mania of the 1980s. Buyers poured $18 billion into the junk bond market from 1986 through 1988. However weaker and weaker bond offerings were being underwritten. Interest coverage,the ratio of operating earnings to interest payments, is one measure of the riskiness of debt financing. Before the junk bond era a ratio of 6 to 1 was considered normal. At the beginning of the junk bond era a ratio in range of 2 to 1 was considered risky. Near the end the market was buying bonds of firms with interest coverage ratios in the range of 0.75. This means the firm could not possibly meet its debt payments out of earnings. The ratio of cash flow, which includes depreciation allowances as well as current earnings, to interest payments was in range of 1.25 to 1. The junk bond offerings began to rely upon interest payments in bonds rather than cash. This is just a disguised way of deferring interest payments. Ultimately, the junk bond market collapsed and investors realized that often the higher interest rates were not enough considering the higher risk the junk bonds entailed. The bonds issued in KKR LBOs generally performed much better than the junk bond market in general.
