إن تقدّماً مذهلاً قد تحقّق في تنفيذ الاتفاقية حتى الآن. وهناك الآن 142 دولة طرفاً في الاتفاقية ـ آخرها إستونيا التي نهنئها بحرارة. وقد تراجع استعمال وإنتاج ونقل الألغام المضادة للأفراد على نحو هائل. وأقدمت الدول الأطراف على تدمير أكثر من 31 مليون لغم مضاد للأفراد في إطار المواعيد النهائية الخاصة بها والتي تحددها الاتفاقية. وتجري إزالة الألغام في أغلب الدول الأطراف المتضررة من الألغام. والأهم من ذلك هو أن اللجنة الدولية للصليب الأحمر قد وجدت أنه حيثما جري تطبيق قواعد الاتفاقية بالكامل انخفض عدد ضحايا الألغام الجدد، بنسبة تصل إلى الثلثين أو أكثر في بعض الحالات.
