The AAU Deanship of Student Affairs in collaboration with the Community engagement committee at Abu Dhabi Campus organized an event in commemoration of Al Isra Wal Mi’raj. Dr. Noor Aldeen Atatreh, AAU Chancellor, and Prof. Abdelhafid Belarbi, AAU Vice President attended the seminar in addition to faculty members, staff, and students.

The campaign included the publication and distribution of a book titled The Niqab is Custom Not Religion, issued by the ministry and distributed to imams and several other ministries, including the Ministry of Education, according to Dr. Salem Abd al-Galil, the Deputy Minister of Awqaf who was appointed by the minister to lead the campaign. Some newspapers reported that several women who attended the seminar removed the niqab.

29- تناولت عدة تقارير صحفية الحملة التي شنتها وزارة الأوقاف في منتصف شهر إبريل 2009 لمواجهة ظاهرة انتشار النقاب، والتي بدأت بمحاولات لإقناع العاملات بالوزارة بأن "النقاب عادة وليست فريضة." وقد شملت الحملة وفقاً للتقارير عقد ندوة حضرتها خمس عشرة منتقبة من العاملات لتوعيتهن بالرأي الشرعي في الموضوع، ولتوضيح أن "النقاب مجرد عادة أو أحد التقاليد التي لا يجب الخلط بينها وبين التعاليم الإسلامية الصحيحة" كما نسب إلى وزارة الأوقاف. كما تضمنت الحملة أيضا إصدار وتوزيع كتاب بعنوان (النقاب عادة وليس عبادة)، والذي أصدرته الوزارة وتم توزيعه على الأئمة وعدد من الوزارات، خاصة وزارة التربية والتعليم وفقاً لتصريحات الدكتور سالم عبد الجليل, وكيل وزارة الأوقاف والذي كلف من قبل الوزير بقيادة الحملة. وقد ذكرت بعض الصحف أن عدداً من العاملات اللاتي تلقين الندوة قمن بخلع النقاب.
