​​​​​​​عميد كلية العلوم الاجتماعية والإنسانية وأستاذ الأدب العربي والمقارن، وأستاذ فخري بجامعة إكستر بالمملكة المتحدة، التي قضى فيها القسم الأعظم من حياته المهنية، حيث شارك في تأسيس قسم الدراسات العربية والإسلامية في أواخر السبعينات قبل أن يصبح مديرا لمعهد الدراسات العربية والإسلامية لاحقا. 

تشمل اهتماماته البحثية الأدب العربي الحديث بكل أنواعه والدراسات المقارنة، مع  التركيز على الأدب الروائي عامة، واهتمام خاص بأدب نجيب محفوظ، الروائي المصري الحاصل على جائزة نوبل في الآداب. يهتم أيضا بانعكاسات الذات والآخر في الإنتاج الأدبي والثقافي.

من بين أهم أعمال رشيد العناني البحثية، كتابه بالإنكليزية بعنوان "نجيب محفوظ: البحث عن المعنى" (روتلدج، لندن، 1993)، والذي يعتبر الدراسة الوحيدة الشاملة المتوفرة للكاتب، والذي قام الدكتور العناني بتحيينه لاحقا بعنوان "نجيب محفوظ: حياته وعصره" (دار نشر الجامعة الأمريكية في القاهرة، 2007). من بين أعماله الفارقة أيضا كتابه بالإنكليزية "التمثيلات العربية للغرب: اللقاءات العربية الغربية في الأدب القصصي العربي" (روتلدج، لندن، 2006) والذي يحاول فيه أن يعكس منظور إدوارد سعيد في دراسته الشهيرة "الاستشراق"، فيدرس نظرة المفكرين العرب إلى الغرب خلال القرنين الماضيين. يرأس الدكتور العناني أيضا السلسلة الوحيدة في اللغة الإنكليزية المكرّسة للدراسات النقدية للأدب العربي الحديث والتي تصدر عن مطبعة جامعة إدنبره في المملكة المتحدة.

ومن ضمن نشاطاته أيضا في رعاية الأدب العربي عضويته لمجلس أمناء "الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية"، وللجنة التحكيم لجائزة نجيب محفوظ للأدب التي تمنحها دار نشر الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة.​
