وارتفاع مستوى سطح البحر عند الاحترار أمر حتمي. ويستمر التوسع الحراري قرونا عديدة بعد تثبيت تركيزات غازات الدفيئة عند أي من مستويات التثبيت المقيَّمة، مما يحدث في النهاية ارتفاعا في مستوى سطح البحر أكبر كبيرا مما هو متوقع للقرن 21 (الجدول 1-5). فإذا ثبّتت تركيزات غازات الدفيئة والهباء الجوي عند مستويات العام 2000، بات من المتوقع أن يؤدي التوسع الحراري وحده إلى مزيد من الارتفاع في مستوى سطح البحر بنسبة تتراوح بين 0.3 و0.8 المتر. وأما المساهمات النهائية لانحسار الصفائح الجليدية في جرينلاند فيمكن أن تبلغ عدة أمتار، وهو معدل أكبر من ذلك الذي ينتج عن التوسع الحراري إذا ما استمر الاحترار لعدة قرون بدرجات تزيد على 4.6-1.9 درجة سلسيوس فوق درجات حرارة عصر ما قبل الثورة الصناعية. وهذه النتائج الطويلة الأجل قد تنطوي على آثار كبيرة على السواحل العالمية. وأما التوسع الحراري الطويل الأجل واستجابة الصفائح الجليدية للاحترار فيعنيان أن إستراتيجيات التخفيف الهادفة إلى تثبيت تركيزات غازات الدفيئة (أو المؤثرات الإشعاعية) عند المستويات الحالية أو فوقها لا تثبت مستوى سطح البحر لقرون عديدة. {الفريق العامل الأول 7-10}
