يعد وصول عربات ورجال الإطفاء من أجل إطفاء حريق عنصراً مثيراً وشديد البروز لجهود المجتمع من أجل الحد من مخاطر النار وآثارها الضارة. ولكن في غالبية الوقت فإن خليطاً من التدابير البسيطة وغير المحسوسة إلى حد كبير، مثل أجهزة الكشف عن الدخان وقواعد البناء والمخارج المُعلّمة جيداً المستخدمة عند الحريق وتمارين الإخلاء الآمن وأدوات الإطفاء والنظام النضحي، تقلّل بفعالية من مخاطر الحريق.
