إنَّ تصاعد التّدخل الروسي يعطي خيار المنطقة الآمنة قيمة استراتيجية مضافة، على عكس ما يمكن ظنه من أنه قد جعل فكرة المنطقة الآمنة أمرا عفا عليه الزمن. وعلى أوروبا والولايات المتحدة أنّ تحاججا الرئيس بوتين بأنّ النظام السوري سيدفع ثمناً عسكرياً نتيجة الدعم الروسي المباشر إلى أن تدخل روسيا والنظام في مفاوضات حقيقية حول المرحلة الانتقالية. وقد تفتح المنطقة الآمنة آفاقاً لم تكن متصورة حتى الآن عن الترتيبات العسكرية والأمنية على الأرض والتي قد تسبق المفاوضات السياسية. إنّ المعارضة السورية بشقيها السياسي والعسكري تعي فعلياً الخطر المتزايد الذي تمثله داعش كونها (المعارضة) أول ضحايا جرائمها. وقد يمكن في ظل ظروف معينة، حين تلتزم القوى الغربية جدياً بحماية المدنيين وإنهاء اللعبة دون الأسد، أن يتم إقناع المعارضة المسلحة بالموافقة على تجميد جبهات المعارك ضد قوات النظام كي تقوم بتوجيه سلاحها ضد داعش باعتبارها أولوية، مع قيام الجيش الموالي بنفس العملية في المناطق الخاضعة لسيطرته. كما أن تقاسم الأعباء بشكل فعلي قد يؤدي إلى خلق القوّة البريّة الضرورية لقتال داعش.
