لقد عانت السيدة مي مافالانغ بونوان بصورة مباشرة من درجات من وصمة العار والتمييز المرتفعة ضد الأشخاص المصابين بالإيدز. وكأرملة وأم لأربعة أطفال تعيش في ليسوتو، في الجنوب الأفريقي، قررت بشجاعة أن تفصح عن إصابتها بالفيروس لأسرتها ومجتمعها المحلي ولمقاطعتها بأسرها. وفي عام 2004، وبعد التعافي من معاناة طويلة من مرض يتصل بالإيدز، انضمت السيدة بونوان إلى مجموعة مساندة في مقاطعتها. وهذه المجموعة مكرسة الآن لتعبئة المجتمعات المحلية لمكافحة وصمة العار والتمييز ولتوفير الرعاية والدعم لأعضائها. وتعمل السيدة بونوان "كمريضة خبيرة" ومستشار غير متخصص في المستشفى الحكومي في كوثينغ، لتهيئة العيش الإيجابي للمرضى المصابين بالإيدز والمرضى المصابين بالسل على السواء.
