But as importantly, Abbas is not Arafat, the man who turned Palestinian politics in the second half of the 1990 into authoritarianism. He could not rule by dictate. As he did when he was first elected in January 2005, Abbas sought Hamas’s cooperation in arranging a ceasefire with Israel by integrating it into the formal political process, an integration that eventually led to its electoral victory. But it was not the dictates of electoral politics that led to the Mecca Agreement; Hamas already has a 60% majority in the parliament. Instead, it was the recognition of both Fateh and Hamas that the alternative to mutual compromise is continued bloodshed. Consensus building, not electoral politics, will now dominate Palestinian politics. This is a positive development that needs to be encouraged because it is the most effective means of bringing Hamas into the larger Palestinian and international consensus on the need for a two-state solution to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

في ضوء الادعاءات الأخيرة بأن اللجنة البحرينية المُستقلة لتقصي الحقائق قد توصلت إلى قرارٍ نهائي بشأن التحقيق في الأحداث التي وقعت في المملكة خلال شهري فبراير ومارس المُنصرمين، فضلاً عن الهجوم اللفظي والجسدي على موظفيها فإن اللجنة تودُ أن تؤكد أنه بالرغم من بعض العناوين غير دقيقة في الأخبار الأخيرة والتي إدعت أن اللجنة قالت بأن حكومة البحرين لم ترتكب جرائم ضد الإنسانية خلال المظاهرات التي وقعت على مدى الأشهر الماضية فإن اللجنة تود أن توضح بأنها لم تقدم أي قرار من هذا القبيل وأن تحقيقاتها مستمرة، وسوف تستمر حتى تم جمع كل الأدلة ذات الصلة بالأحداث، وإن كافة موظفيها لازالوا مُستمرين في عملية إجراء المقابلات مع الضحايا والشهود، وجمع كل الأدلة، وتقييم الظروف، كما وإن اللجنة لم تقدم أي تقرير عن حجم انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان في البحرين حتى اكتمال التحقيق، وأن الأمر لا يعدو أن يكون قيام بعض وسائل الإعلام والنشطاء بتحريف تعليقات لرئيس اللجنة، الأستاذ الدكتور محمود شريف بسيوني من أجل دعم مواقفهم السياسية، ومن ثم فإنه لمن الضروري التأكيد على أن اللجنة لن تسمح لنفسها أن تستخدم كأداة سياسية لأية جماعة..
