The White Storks is a protected species, according to the Biodiversity Act. In Bulgaria storks are some of the best known and most loved birds and are regarded as symbols of the family, fertility and good luck. The stork is the only large bird inhabiting mainly urban centres and living alongside humans. Thus, it is among the most sensitive indicators of the state of the environment inhabited by ourselves. The violation against this beautiful bird compromises the achievements of scores of years' worth of hard and purposeful nature conservation work to prevent this species, emblematic for Bulgaria and for its nature. In the year of the 7th international white stork counting, conducted every 10 years, this crime reminds us of how important it is for each one of us to be active and to take action where information about such a deed exists.

Престъпленията срещу дивата природа са проблем, на който до скоро не е обръщано необходимото внимание. Въпреки, че много диви видове са защитени от международни конвенции като CITES (Конвенцията за международна търговия със застрашени видове от дивата флора и фауна) както и от Европейското и Българското законодателство, в последните няколко години се оказва, че в следствие на подобни престъпления световно застрашени видове са вече на прага на изчезването. Такъв пример за България е ловният сокол.
