This impact is one of the reasons that UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) recently added co-operatives to its list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. UNESCO established the list in 2003 to acknowledge that the human experience is not defined only by tangible places and monuments, but equally by practices and traditions. A member-state must make such a nomination, and Germany made the case for co-operative recognition, noting that co-operatives ‘strive for a more just development of globalization processes’.

Aquest impacte és un dels motius pels quals la UNESCO (l’Organització de les Nacions Unides per a l’Educació, la Ciència i la Cultura) ha afegit recentment a les cooperatives a la seva llista de patrimoni cultural intangible de la humanitat. La UNESCO va establir la llista en el 2003 per reconèixer que l’experiència humana no es defineix solament per llocs i monuments tangibles, sinó també per pràctiques i tradicions. Un Estat Membre ha de realitzar la nominació, i Alemanya va presentar el cas del reconeixement de les cooperatives, subratllant que les cooperatives “lluiten per un desenvolupament més just dels processos de globalització”.
