La paraula “Patata” és un préstec lingüístic provinent del castellà. Al seu torn el mot en castellà és un altre préstec provinent de la llengua quítxua: el mot Papa i d'igual significat. Del creuament entre el mot batata (Moniato), paraula originària de l'illa l'Hispaniola, i papa en resultà "patata". Inicialment els conqueridors empraren el terme patada, a causa de la similitud de formes, tant a la papa com a la batata. Des del castellà el terme s'exportà a altres idiomes, degut, principalment, al fet que es conegué el tubèrcul mitjançant la importació d'aquest des de terres castellanes.
