The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia mourns the death, last 15 August, of the politician, sociologist and ornithologist Joaquim Maluquer Sostres, who represented the Catalan Encyclopaedia at the board of the Centre until 2010. Maluquer was granted the Cross of St. George in 1996 for his professional and civic commitment, having assumed the highest business and politic responsibilities, and in recognition of the many initiatives of cultural dynamisation that he led in the fields of humanities and natural sciences. He played a key role in the transition period and became the first Secretary of Jordi Pujol's Government at the Generalitat.

El Centre UNESCO de Catalunya lamenta la mort, aquest diumenge 15 d'agost, del polític, sociòleg i ornitòleg Joaquim Maluquer Sostres, que va representar l'Enciclopèdia Catalana a la junta de l'entitat fins a l'any 2010. Maluquer va rebre la Creu de Sant Jordi, l'any 1996, pel seu compromís professional i cívic, per assumir càrrecs de màxima responsabilitat empresarial i política, i com a reconeixement de les nombroses iniciatives de dinamització cultural que va liderar en els àmbits de la humanística i les ciències naturals. Va tenir un paper determinant en el període de transició i va ser el secretari del primer govern de Jordi Pujol a la Generalitat.
