En els estadis inicials s'ha d'instruir al pacient en la necessitat de protegir-se de les radiacions solars amb unes ulleres adequades i emprar col·liris lubricants amb freqüència per disminuir la irritació local i eliminar l'acumulació de substàncies inflamatòries a la llàgrima. S'ha de fer una fotografia de l'estat del pterigi i realitzar controls semestrals o anuals en funció del creixement. En casos en els quals es documenti una progressió òbvia, hi hagi molèsties estètiques, un inflamació crònica o una amenaça per a la visió perquè el cap del pterigi provoqui astigmatisme o pugui arribar a tapar el eix visual, s'ha de plantejar l'opció quirúrgica. La cirurgia consisteix a eliminar tot el teixit conjuntival fibrós que ha crescut, netejar i polir bé el cap que ha crescut sobre la còrnia i col·locar en substitució un empelt obtingut de conjuntiva del mateix ull, moltes vegades fixat amb un adhesiu biològic sense necessitat de sutures. Amb aquesta tècnica en mans expertes el percentatge de recidives és menor al 5%.

L’EM és una malaltia degenerativa, crònica i inflamatòria del sistema nerviós central, que destrueix la substància protectora (mielina) de les fibres nervioses i que afecta a persones joves (20-40 anys). El procés inflamatori provoca episodis transitoris de disfunció neurològica, o brots, però, amb el temps, la malaltia es converteix en un procés neurodegeneratiu que comporta un augment progressiu de la discapacitat. En l’actualitat no existeixen teràpies per curar aquesta malaltia i els tractaments existents tenen nombrosos efectes secundaris i només son eficaços en les fases inicials. La NMO, per la seva banda, és una malaltia desmielitzant però amb una incidència menor, que afecta a totes les races i que es més greu que l’EM.

Investigadors del Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Diabetes y Enfermedades Metabólicas Asociadas (CIBERDEM) i del Centre de Ciencies Òmiques de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili, dirigits pel bioquímic Òscar Yanes -investigador del Departament d’Enginyeria Electrònica, Elèctrica i Automàtica-, han identificat un marcador precoç en sang, concretament la forma oxidada de l’aminoàcid metionina, els nivells del qual reflecteixen la incapacitat de maduració de les lipoproteïnes d’alta densitat HDL (el conegut com a colesterol bo), un fet que provoca que les partícules HDL no puguin créixer i que, per tant, no puguin fer la seva funció protectora. L’afectació de la maduració de les lipoproteïnes HDL pot produir alteracions metabòliques vinculades a la diabetis tipus 2 i malalties cardiovasculars.
