Des de la Revolució Industrial, el funcionament del capitalisme ha descansat en el dualisme entre el camp i la ciutat. Ambdós conceptes s’han carregat, al llarg dels dos darrers segles, de significacions culturals, socials, econòmiques i polítiques. “Ser de camp” o “ser de ciutat”, pertànyer a l’àmbit cultural rural o a l’urbà, eren –són– senyals d’identitat plens de lectures diferents i contradictòries entre si. Aquest món, aquest escenari dual, és a punt de caure fet miques davant nostre. Una criatura que neixi avui, possiblement ingressarà a la universitat en un planeta en el qual una gran majoria d’habitants viurà en ciutats. Serà el primer cop que això passi en la història de la humanitat. Com serà la civilització urbana emergent? Quines seran les condicions necessàries per prosperar-hi? Quin paper jugarà la globalització en una societat eminentment urbana? Quins factors actuals seran fonamentals aleshores, i quins no? Són preguntes que, contra el que pot semblar, tenen respostes molt obertes.
