談亞省，不能不先看看外面世界的大勢。依筆者看來，2007年仍將是中文教育行情看漲、持續發展的一年。之所以這樣說，是因爲有幾個重要的迹象：其一，“孔子學院”快速增長。2004年11月，第一所孔子學院在韓國首都開張；第二年夏天，北京召開“世界漢語大會”時，達到27所，從那以後，陡然進入突飛猛進階段，至今已有100餘所之多，翻了三倍。“孔子學院”的基本性質是什麽？它是在海外推廣中文的教育機構。孔子學院的增加，意味著學中文人數的增加。歐洲、非洲、東南亞、西亞直到墨西哥，有很多國家官方介入，要求開展中文教育。其二，從2006年11月16-19日召開的全美外語教師協會(American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, ACTFL)年會透露出來的資訊顯示，美國中文教育正在醞釀著一個飛躍。本屆會議中，中文佔有相當比重。而各個中文專題小組會的焦點集中在中文課程設置和課程大綱開發上面。躍躍欲試的勁頭顯而易見。其三，中文教師的需求量越來越大。中國國家漢辦每年外派教師以千計，其中派到美國的就有一百名左右。雖然筆者並不知道某些媒體所說“全球缺少中文老師幾百萬人”根據何在，但是中文教職增加卻是有目共睹的。遠的不說，愛城U of A 正在招聘四位教席，天主教高中St. Francis Xavier也剛新招了一位中文老師。
