With respect to third countries, EU manufacturers could be helped if the additional protection of geographical indications were extended to cover further products, such as wine and spirits, and if the World Trade Organization (WTO) were to introduce a mandatory PGI/PDO register for all products. However, some WTO countries do not recognise the EU systems and implement similar product labelling, for instance, by means of trademarks.

Ve vztahu ke třetím zemím by výrobcům EU pomohlo i rozšíření dodatečné ochrany zeměpisných označení na jiné výrobky, než jsou vína a lihoviny, případně v rámci Světové obchodní organizace (WTO) zavedení povinného registru PGI/PDO pro všechny výrobky. Některé třetí země WTO však systémy EU neuznávají a podobné označování výrobků realizují například prostřednictvím ochranných známek. Evropská komise usiluje ve WTO o uznání alespoň několika desítek PDO/PGI, které by měly mít vyšší prioritu než ochranné známky.
