What comes to your mind when you hear “Greek dances”? Probably, the first dance that comes to mind is the “Syrtaki”. And not without reason. Syrtaki became known all over the world thanks to the movie “Zorbas the Greek”. Most of us have in mind Anthony Quinn dancing this dance and saying: “geia sou, leventi!”. Indeed, the Sirtaki represents the Greek people and their soul, but it is actually a dance that was “made” for the movie and a “combination” of various Greek steps you can find in the traditional dances.

Greece has a wide variety of traditional dances. From area to area, there are several differences and they all have their semantics. Slow and heavy dances in Epirus (that’s life in the mountains), lively and rhythmic in the Aegean islands (dancers imitate the waves and the seagulls), fast and “leventikoi” (brave and upstanding) in Crete. Each Greek dance carries the mentality, the habits and the customs of each area. The steps, the way we hold the hands, the costumes and of course the music, they all have something to tell about people and their life.

Those who suffered from space sickness following rotation proved to have high otolith asymmetry and more sensitive otolith and canal systems. These people could not be classified as sensitive or non-sensitive on the basis of this asymmetry alone, but could on the basis of a combination of various otolith and canal features.

Nooij testte deze otoliet-asymmetrie hypothese. Bij vijftien proefpersonen, bij wie de gevoeligheid voor ruimteziekte al eerder was bepaald, werd de eenzijdige otolietfunctie gemeten, alsmede de functie van de halfcirkelvormige kanalen. De personen die last hadden van ruimteziekte na het centrifugeren, bleken een grote otoliet-asymmetrie te hebben en een grotere gevoeligheid van zowel het otoliet- als het kanaalsysteem. De personen konden niet ingedeeld worden als gevoelig of niet-gevoelig op basis van deze asymmetrie alleen, maar wel op basis van een combinatie van verschillende otoliet- en kanaaleigenschappen. Dit laat zien dat het hele evenwichtsorgaan betrokken is bij ruimteziekte en dat het vermoedelijk gaat om de complexe interacties tussen de verschillende delen van het evenwichtsorgaan.

Dit opent grote mogelijkheden voor allerlei medische en industriële toepassingen, met name waar het gaat om combinatie van verschillende nano-imaging technieken en conventionele optische microscopie. Hierdoor kan informatie van verschillende lengteschalen worden gecombineerd. Het wordt dan mogelijk om biologische processen zeer realistisch te volgen. Ook voor de industrie liggen grote kansen. Een voorbeeld is het katalyse-onderzoek. Real-life, real-time nano-imaging maakt het mogelijk katalyseprocessen veel beter waar te nemen met als logisch gevolg betere katalysatoren en efficiëntere chemische processen. In Nederland werken microscopenfabrikant FEI, Universiteit Leiden en TU Delft samen aan onderzoek op het gebied van nanomicroscopie.
