Vanaf 1982 wordt de thematiek van zijn werk minder zwaarmoedig; zijn persoonlijke mythologie, tijd, herinnering en de geschiedenis komen centraal te staan. De kunstenaar is op verschillende manieren aanwezig in zijn werk. Zijn eigen naam of die van zijn alter ego, kapitein Sarkis, duikt op in titels, maar ook voegt hij soms zijn hartslag of ademhaling toe als een ritmisch element - hoorbaar of zichtbaar. De installaties worden kleurrijk. Met gekleurd licht (in het begin de complementaire kleuren groen en rood) transformeert hij de ruimte. Ook zijn fascinatie voor geluid en muziek wordt in de loop van de tijd zichtbaar.
