“During debates with colleagues and people from the industry, I realised how mulitidisciplinary and widespread the subject of safety is. That's when I was bitten by the safety bug. And, since 9/11, this has been joined by a healthy interest in security. After all, the essence is the same: dealing with uncertainty. My area of research is extremely broad. There is always something new to learn, and that makes it fascinating. There are also many overlaps with other disciplines, such as chemistry, engineering, psychology and economics, which are also passions of mine.”

Zijn passie voor veiligheid deed hij op tijdens zijn promotieonderzoek naar geclusterde veiligheidscultuur in de chemische industrie. “Tijdens debatten met collega's en mensen uit de industrie zag ik hoe multidisciplinair het onderwerp Safety is en hoe wijdverbreid. Op dat moment werd ik door het veiligheidsvirus gegrepen. Sinds 9/11 is beveiliging daar bij gekomen. De essentie is immers dezelfde: de omgang met onzekerheid. Mijn onderzoeksgebied is enorm breed. Er valt altijd iets nieuws te leren en dat maakt het fascinerend. Bovendien zijn er veel raakvlakken met andere disciplines, zoals chemie, engineering, psychologie en economie, ook allemaal passies van mij.”

Wel, dat is een slechte zaak ... Om de uitdagingen voor Europa aan te pakken, moeten we al onze scherpste geesten inschakelen. Dat lukt niet door telkens dezelfde discussies en debatten met dezelfde sprekers te herhalen, die maar de helft van de Europese bevolking en arbeidskrachten vertegenwoordigen. We kunnen niet voorbijgaan aan de mening van vrouwen in Brussel, want dan sluiten we ervaring uit die we nodig hebben om een goed beleid uit te stippelen.
