Voor vele praktische en wetenschappelijke doeleinden, heeft België behoefte aan doorlopende kennis van het veranderend geomagnetisch veld. Dit is onder anderen het geval voor de magnetische deklinatie, die gebruikt wordt om het noorden te vinden met een kompas. Daarvoor worden waarnemingen uitgevoerd in de magnetisch observatoria te Dourbes en Manhay die ook opgenomen zijn in de lijst van observatorai van IAGA. Metingen van de komplete geomagnetische vektor worden elke minuut uitgevoerd en opgeslagen.
