Although baroque art may be conveniently associated with theatrical, gesticulating figures, it still manages, more than any other art movement, to put characters on stage able to give expression to their feelings in a serene and subdued manner. A case in point is the figure of St. Peter, sculpted by Artus I Quellinus (1609-1668). As his patron saint, he decorated the memorial to canon Peter Saboth (†1658), destined for the first north column in the nave where the saint was intended to be the first in a time-honoured series of the apostles placed against all of the nave’s then 12 empty columns. In the absence of (interest from) other deceased parishioners with wealthy backgrounds, Peter was left to stand alone on his high perch and was subsequently taken down.

Tuzla has been inhabited for more than 6,000 years, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. Due to the arrival of refugees, the population in Tuzla has considerably grown. There are still a number of old mosques in use, such as the Turalibeg mosque dating from 1572. Another city mosque, Čaršijska džamija, which was built in 1548, was completely renovated in 1874. In the middle of the square in front of the mosque you can find a beautiful wesma, a fountain for the ritual cleansing of the body. Close to the Čaršijska džamija is the Šarena džamija (Colourful Mosque) from the seventeenth century. The Roman Catholic St. Peter's Church was built in 1873 on the site where a Franciscan monastery used to stand. However, it had to be moved in 1987 because the ground under the church began to sag. The National Theatre that the Habsburgs built in 1898 is the oldest theatre of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Local groups regularly perform here, but performances in other languages are rare.

The name ‘Paramaribo’ is probably derived from the name of an Amerindian village called Parmirbo. In the beginning of the 17th century a trade post was set up in this village. This post was conquered by the English after which they built a fort called Fort Willoughby. In 1667, the area was conquered by Abraham Crijnssen and the city Paramaribo was expanded in western direction. After the abolition of slavery in 1863 and the termination of contract labor in 1873, many people moved to the city. This made it once again necessary to expand the city and in 1987 a governmental re-division took place at which the district was subdivided into 12 resorts. Since 2002, the center of Paramaribo is placed on the Unesco World Heritage List of historical monuments. One of the protected buildings is the St. Peter & Paul Cathedral at the former Gravenstraat (now called Henck Arronstraat) which is completely constructed of wood and which is the largest wooden building in South America. As of the seventies, the church was in dire need of restoration and in October 1989 it was no longer responsible to continue services in the church and the building was closed down. In 2002, a start was made with an extensive restoration project.

Aan het begin van de 17e eeuw werd er in dit dorp een handelspost gevestigd. Deze werd door de Engelsen overgenomen en zij bouwden een fort genaamd Fort Willoughby . In 1667 werd het gebied veroverd door Abraham Crijnssen. Vanaf het fort werd Paramaribo richting het westen uitgebreid. Na de afschaffing van de slavernij in 1863 en het aflopen van de contractarbeid in 1873, trokken vele mensen naar de stad. Dit maakte een stadsuitbreiding noodzakelijk. In 1987 vond er een bestuurlijke herindeling plaats, waarbij het district werd onderverdeeld in 12 ressorten. Sinds 2002 is het centrum van Paramaribo geplaatst op de Unesco Wereld Erfgoedlijst van historische monumenten. Een van de beschermde gebouwen is de Sint Petrus en Paulus Kathedraal aan de vroegere Gravenstraat (nu de Henck Arronstraat geheten) die geheel uit hout is opgetrokken en tevens het grootste houten gebouw van Zuid-Amerika is. In de jaren zeventig van deze eeuw was de kerk aan een grondige restauratie toe. In oktober 1989 was het niet langer verantwoord diensten in de kerk voort te zetten en werd het gebouw gesloten. In 2002 startte men met een uitgebreid restauratieproject.
