The modern word “mattress” comes from the Arab “matrah” and the “materasso” of Renaissance Italy. Historically, the Gauls appear to have invented a rustic mattress which became increasingly comfortable with the incorporation of horsehair and wool, then the addition of a webbing-based box spring.

Ballet incorporates folk-derived influences, but its present-day decorum and style reflects its courtly origins in Renaissance Italy. Dancing was part of the lavish spectacles princes staged to symbolize their power and wealth.
