Cotton is best known for his British military involvement during the War of 1812, and was one of 1300 soldiers involved in the Battle of Fort George on May 27, 1813. Mortally wounded and left on the field after the battle, Cotton died from his wounds in Lower Canada after he was captured and repatriated later that year.

Le Major Cotton est surtout connu pour sa participation militaire dans les forces britanniques au cours de la guerre de 1812, et il comptait parmi les 1 300 soldats qui ont livré combat lors de la bataille du fort George le 27 mai 1813. Blessé gravement et abandonné sur le champ de bataille après le combat, le Major Cotton a finalement succombé à ses blessures au Bas-Canada plus tard cette année-là, après avoir été capturé puis rapatrié.
