Dès que le personnage de cette femme a fait surface, nous avons commencé à jouer avec l'idée de lui imaginer une famille. Un mari psychologue d'une intransigeance et d'une ferveur absolue sur le plan professionnel, et un fils qui cherche sa place dans la vie et tente de constituer une communauté autour de lui. Nous souhaitions présenter la famille comme un problème à plusieurs facettes : un regroupement artificiel dans lequel tout et chacun est déterminé, jusqu'aux désirs et intentions de ses membres constitutifs. Nous voulions montrer la famille après son éclatement et avons invité le public à réassembler pour eux-mêmes les éléments de la construction artificielle et à nous remettre un compte rendu détaillé de la manière dont il perçoit ce microcosme. Notre collaboration créative était d'accord sur le fait que la famille est la plus petite, mais la plus importante unité de la société. C'est précisément pour cela que nous espérions tous qu'en étudiant ce modèle d'unité, quelques détails soulignant le dysfonctionnement de l'ensemble plus large - la société - puissent émerger. L'une de nos découvertes les plus déconcertantes était de constater que malgré la communauté artificielle que constitue la famille, elle défie toute description purement méthodique. Il y a quelque chose au cœur de chaque communauté qui échappe à la raison pure. C'est ce que nous avons décidé d'appeler très simplement son « âme » et avons conclu que c'est ce qui manque aussi à notre société en tant que macrocosme.
