Bianca Steinhilber, M.A., studied European Studies, History, Cultural Studies, Slavic and Romance Studies at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, the University of Paris IV Sorbonne and the RWTH Aachen University. In her M.A. thesis she explored the phenomenology of Jihad and the resulting consequences for the security and order in Germany. Her dissertation deals with the jihadi radicalization in the European Union and the implementation through the national states in matters of prevention. She is a scholar of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and works for an EU-financed prevention project against religious extremism.

B-ZONE is a territorial research and collaborative art project on the transformation of the social and political geographies stretching from Southeast Europe (the Balkans) to Turkey and the Caucasus. Each of the three core projects follows the trajectory and history of a large-scale transnational infrastructure laid down in the territories of former communist states. The Black Sea Files by Ursula Biemann explores the new pipeline connecting Baku, the world's oldest oil capital on the Caspian shore, with the Mediterreanean; Postwar Footprints by media researcher Lisa Parks investigates telecommunication and satellite infrastructure before and after the Balkan wars; and Timescapes, a project by Angela Melitopoulos with partners in Ankara, Athens and Belgrade, follows the EU-financed "Corridor X" along the Yugoslav "Highway of Brotherhood and Unity," the historic migration route connecting Germany with Turkey. The exhibition B-ZONE investigates the implications of these distinct infrastructures as sites of lived experience against the backdrop of neocolonial economic strategies, mass migration and war, while at the same time questioning the democratic character of the current ideologies of capitalist "integration" prevailing since the collapse of the Soviet bloc, which are assumed to be progressive and of historical necessity. Beyond the simple accumulation of information and facts, these artistic and theoretical approaches interlace the symbolic production of subjective and collective spaces of representation with the "silent language" of infrastructure.

B-ZONE untersucht die Räume und Implikationen dieser Infrastrukturen als gelebte Erfahrung vor dem historischen Hintergrund von Massenmigration, Vertreibung und Krieg. The End of the Cold War signalled the political reorganisation of the region of South Caucasus and was also accompanied by extensive plans for the reconfiguration of the infrastructure in the region. In the 1990s, the EU financed a corridor study for the configuration of a new Europe – Caucasus – Asia railway route. The main drivers of the EU are economic and political: the new railway could move Western industrial products to the East and petroleum products to the West, also consolidating the EU´s political influence in the region. Meanwhile, Chinese policymakers and the Chinese government drafted their own plans for the configuration of transnational railway corridors that would connect China to Europe through Central Asia. The United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Pacific endorsed these plans in the 1990s and has been promoting them ever since. We can see then that politically strong national and transnational actors see infrastructure planning and specifically the formation of transnational railway corridors as a powerful instrument of political expansion and economic growth. The project discusses projects for the reconfiguration of Asian railways from the 1940s to the Present, focusing on visions for establishing Europe Asia freight routes. By examining such projects it seeks to explore how Europe Asian relations have been formed in the low politics arena of infrastructural development, since the end of the WWII. Ultimately, an interpretation of the competing political and economic agendas ´hidden´ in these projects, as well as an analysis of the factors that lead to their realisation (or non-realisation) – be they economic, political or technological – can prove a useful instrument to policy makers.

The North-Caucasus Federal University of Stavropol (Russia) in cooperation with the REEES Centre of the University of Graz (Austria) organized both in 2014 and 2015 Winter Schools on EU Law in the North Caucasus (EULINC). Drawing on the successful experience of the EU-financed Summer School EULISC (EU Law in the South Caucasus), the EULINC Winter Schools in Pyatigorsk was designed to spread knowledge on EU Law, EU integration and Eurasian integration, conflict resolution, as well as the challenges faced in the light of the Eurasian Integration. The Winter School hosted approximately 20 students from all countries of the wider Caucasus region and offered a platform to discuss and elaborate on current topics in the field of EU law with legal and political relevance for EU-Russia relations and EU versus Eurasian integration. Academic experts and scholars from both Europe and Russia will gave lectures, feeding into each other by raising the contemporary challenges.

Sie bot Studenten aus allen Ländern der Kaukasus-Region und aus Europa eine Plattform auf gegenwärtigen Themen im Bereich des EU-Rechts mit legaler und politischer Relevanz für die EU-Russland Beziehungen an. Akademische Experten und Wissenschaftler aus Europa und Russland werden Vorträge über die wachsenden Herausforderungen, die in der EU-Russland-Integration entstehen, halten. EULINC fand unter Kooperation mit der Föderalen Nordkaukasus-Universität Stawropol in Pjatigorsk, einem traditionellen russischen Mineralwasser-Kurort, statt. Pjatigorsk befindet sich am Rande des Kaukasus-Gebirges mit einer prächtigen Aussicht über den schneebedeckten Gipfel des Bergs Elbrus. Die Winterschule richtete sich an ehrgeizige Studierende der breiteren Kaukasus-Region, und Europa, die ihr Wissen über die Themen der Winterschule verbessern und diese im lebhaften multikulturellen Umfeld vor der wunderschönen Kulisse des Nordkaukasus diskutieren wollen.
