The second day started with an opening speech by Mark Patterson, being the Managing Executive Editor at eLIFE. Patterson is a longstanding expert in the scientific publishing business. Again, Impact Factor and research assessment were in the focus of this talk; beyond that however, Patterson revealed a broad spectrum of potentialities for reuse and dissemination of scientific information in the digital age while introducing some promising new approaches in scholarly publishing as well as new ways of outreach assessment like Article Level Metrics.

A week after I submitted a commentary on the Aftonbladet story to the Guardian’s Comment is Free website (the article can be found here), its executive editor Georgina Henry rejected it. Her reasoning, at least to a former Guardian journalist like myself who worked many years on the paper’s foreign desk, seemed more than strange and did not to accord with the newspaper’s usual criteria for assessing either a news story or an opinion piece.

Seit 2004 ist Prof. Adams Ordinarius des Lehrstuhls für Aerodynamik und Strömungsmechanik der TUM. Prof. Adams ist Sprecher des SFB Transregio TRR 40. Er ist Autor einer Monographie zur Large-Eddy Simulation und Executive Editor des J. Comput. Phys.

In an article published in the left-liberal daily El País, Bill Keller, former executive editor of the New York Times, warns against carelessly risking a war with Iran: "The point of tough sanctions, of course, is to force Iranians to the bargaining table. But the mistrust is so deep, and the election-year pressure to act with manly resolve is so intense, that it's hard to imagine the administration would feel free to accept an overture from Tehran. Anything short of a humiliating, unilateral Iranian climb-down would be portrayed by the armchair warriors as an Obama surrender. Likewise, if Israel does decide to strike out on its own, Bibi Netanyahu knows that candidate Obama will feel immense pressure to go along. That short-term paradox comes wrapped up in a long-term paradox: an attack on Iran is almost certain to unify the Iranian people around the mullahs and provoke the supreme leader to redouble Iran's nuclear pursuits, only deeper underground this time, and without international inspectors around. Over at the Pentagon, you sometimes hear it put this way: Bombing Iran is the best way to guarantee exactly what we are trying to prevent."

Der Ex-Chefredakteur der New York Times, Bill Keller, warnt in der linksliberalen Tageszeitung El País davor, leichtfertig einen Krieg zu riskieren: "Mit den harten Sanktionen verfolgt man das Ziel, den Iran an den Verhandlungstisch zu zwingen. Doch das starke Misstrauen in den Iran und der Zwang im Jahr des Wahlkampfs unbedingt mit eiserner Härte aufzutreten, lassen der US-Regierung vermutlich keinen Spielraum, eine Öffnung Teherans zu akzeptieren. Alles außer dem einseitigen und demütigenden Einlenken des Irans würden die Kriegstreiber als Niederlage Obamas darstellen. Und sollte sich Israel dazu entscheiden, auf eigene Faust anzugreifen, weiß Netanjahu, dass der Druck auf den Kandidaten Obama enorm wäre, ihm zu helfen. Dazu kommt längerfristig ein weiterer Widerspruch: Bei einem Angriff auf den Iran würde sich das Volk hinter die Mullahs stellen. Das würde dazu führen, dass der oberste Anführer seine Bemühungen verdoppelt, Atomwaffen zu produzieren, nur noch versteckter. Im Pentagon drücken sie das manchmal so aus: Den Iran zu bombardieren, ist die sicherste Methode genau das zu garantieren, was wir auf jeden Fall verhindern wollen."
