Ein eigenständiges Arbeitsgebiet ist die Entwicklung einer neuen Generation von organischen Heterojunction-Solarzellen. Hier sollen insbesondere sehr große Moleküle mit großen p-Elektronensystemen zum Einsatz kommen, die eine hohe Effizienz versprechen. Forschungsschwerpunkt sind strukturierte Elektroden die auf Bottom-up Techniken auf der Nanometerskala beruhen. Das größte Augenmerk ist auf große Oberflächen und optimierte optoelektrische Eigenschaften gerichtet. Hybride mit anorganischen Systemen sind Teil dieser Aktivitäten.

Im Ex-parte-Verfahren T 802/92 (ABl. 1995, 379) ging es um die Frage, ob die Weglassung eines Merkmals einen technischen Beitrag zum Gegenstand der beanspruchten Erfindung leistet. In der ursprünglich eingereichten Fassung enthielt die Anmeldung nur Erzeugnisansprüche betreffend "eine p-i-n-Fotodiode mit doppeltem Heteroübergang und wenigstens drei Schichten aus verschiedenen Halbleitermaterialien, die zusammen aus wenigstens vier Elementen zusammengesetzt sind, [...] wobei [...] der erste und der zweite ohmsche Kontakt [...]". Im Laufe des Prüfungsverfahrens beanspruchte der Anmelder dann auch ein Verfahren zur Herstellung einer solchen Fotodiode. Im Verfahrensanspruch war jedoch kein Merkmal im Zusammenhang mit der Bildung des ersten und des zweiten ohmschen Kontakts enthalten.

The development of flexible and low-cost opto-electronic devices based on organic materials, like organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field effect transistors (OFETs), or especially photovoltaic cells, is of key importance. With the advent of ecologic energy devices, efficient low-cost photovoltaic devices are urgently needed. Besides the synthesis of highly effective charge generating and transporting materials, the structure of these devices is also crucial, especially when light harvesting is considered. Despite ongoing optimisation efforts in material and component design, organic photovoltaic devices are still less efficient than their inorganic counterparts. Nevertheless, they are considered the next-generation solar cells in view of their light weight, their mechanical flexiblility, and their unmatched low costs.
