The first day begins with workshops lasting an hour and half or three hours and smaller meetings tackling various different topics: Ronen Kadushin introduces the story-telling based design process and Sami Niemelä explains designing discreetness. On the following day, the programme includes lectures presentations and discussions on various themes (ethics and sustainability, open-source hardware, etc.). Louisa Heinrich, Alasdair Allen and Rachel Rayns (Raspberry Pi) will be addressing the design of hardware and its devices.

Catarina Mota ist Mitbegründerin von Open Materials (intelligente Do-it-yourself-Materialien), Everywhere Tech (Open-Source-Technologie-Transfer) und AltLab (Lissabons Hacker-Space). Sie leitet zahlreiche Hands-on-Workshops über Hi-Tech-Materialien und einfache Schaltkreise mit dem Ziel, Menschen mit wenig oder ohne wissenschaftlichen Hintergrund dazu anzuregen, Interesse an Wissenschaft, Technologie und Wissensaustausch zu entwickeln. Zuvor war sie Co-Vorsitzende des Open Hardware Summits 2012, war im Verwaltungsrat der Open Source Hardware Association, unterrichtete als Assistenz-Universitätslehrkraft an der New York University (ITP-NYU) und war Mitglied der portugiesischen Wissenschafts- und Technologie-Stiftung. Catarina Mota bringt gerade ihre Dissertation über die sozialen Auswirkungen von kollaborativen und „Open“-Verfahren auf die Entwicklung von materiellen Gütern und Technologien zum Abschluss. Sie ist derzeit Gastdozentin an der ITP-NYU, Forschungsleiterin der Open Source Hardware Association, Mitglied von NYC Resistor und TED Fellow. Mota hat einen MPS in Dialog-Telekommunikation von der NYU und einen BS in Kommunikationswissenschaften von der Neuen Universität Lissabon (FCSH-UNL).

The main board is responsible for co-ordination between all the sub components of the electronics as well as interacting with the PC driving the RepRap. The primary feature of the main board is a microcontroller. The micro-controller executes a program just like the CPU of a computer does, but instead of using a keyboard and a display as an output mechanism, input/output is done via either sampling the current on one of the pins of the IC or sending out current one of the pins. Which pin is use for input and output is under complete, and the state of output, current/no current or anything in between is under control of the program executed by the microcontroller.
