In gewisser Weise gelingt das, doch der Leser braucht Geduld. In den ersten Teilen des Buches werden zunächst einmal nicht neue Formen globaler Demokratisierung beschrieben, sondern mögliche Vorformen am Material herkömmlicher anarchistischer und neo-marxistischer Vorstellung abgearbeitet. Die Autoren sind hier eher mit der Aufarbeitung ihrer eigenen theoretischen Vergangenheit beschäftigt als mit der Erhellung des Phänomens tatsächlich möglicher Demokratisierungsprozesse im Weltmaßstab. In diesen Abschnitten wird der Begriff der »Multitude« auf den Klassenbegriff und den Begriff der Volkskultur angewandt, im Kontext unterschiedlicher Widerstandsbewegungen durchgespielt - von den südamerikanischen Guerillabewegungen der 60er und 70er Jahre bis zu den Zapatisten Mexikos und den Tute Bianche der Globalisierungsgegner heute - und in immer neuen Anläufen nach strukturellen Analogien gesucht, die eine polyzentrische, weltweit vernetzte, aber nicht institutionalisierbare Bewegung der Demokratisierung verständlich machen könnten.
