According to excavation finds and historical information, the city was not established before the 6th century B.C., but it is possible that it had been founded already at the end of the Geometric period through the unification of the scattered settlements that existed in the plain into one settlement that developed into a considerable naval force.

Κατά την ανασκαφέα του χώρου, πρόκειται για πειρατικό ορμητήριο που τελικά κατέστρεψαν οι Ρωμαίοι στα μέσα του 1ου αι. π.Χ., οπότε σφραγίστηκε και η είσοδος του λιμανιού. Η πόλη ερευνήθηκε ξανά στα μέσα του 19ου αι. από άγγλους περιηγητές, οι οποίοι εντόπισαν τον οικισμό και το κλειστό λιμάνι. Από το 1968 γίνονται διάφορες σωστικές ανασκαφές, ενώ από το 1986 η Εφορεία Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων ξεκίνησε συστηματική έρευνα για τον καθορισμό της έκτασης του λιμανιού και των στοιχείων που το περιβάλλουν.
