The Committee of Regions are all members of Regional and Local Authorities who, within their remit, also have responsibility for the Fire Service. As a member I was pleased to be able to sponsor the event and invite the European Commission to both listen and speak at the event.

In a number of ways. One area of work is Hotel Safety which is an area that the European Parliament is involved with. It was recognised that we need cross-border cooperation in all matters associated with civil protection, disaster management and fire safety. And to me at least it seems an absurd custom, when citizens die, that those most deeply afflicted should be thought the most fitting persons to speak at their obsequies; since those who are most grief-stricken are for that very reason incapable of speech.
