यह ''आपात सहायता'', दरअसल, सोवियत रूस के द्वारा १९५८ में स्पुटनिक छोड़े जाने की प्रतिक्रिया थी। स्पुटनिक संकट के तुरंत बाद, १९५८ में अमेरिका में दो बड़े सुधार कार्यक्रम लागू किये गये, और शीत युद्ध के दौरान अंतरिक्ष की दौड़ में शामिल होने को दुनिया में सबसे शक्तिशाली होने के बतौर समझा गया।[8] एक प्रक्रिया ने जहाँ शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में परिवर्तन किये, वहीं दूसरी ने अब तक की नैशनल ऐडवायीजरी कमिटी फार एयरोनौटिक्स (एन.ए.सी.ए.) में एक बड़ा बदलाव करते हुए इसे नैशनल एयरोनौटिक्स एंड स्पेस एडमिनिस्टेशन (एन.ए.एस. ए., नासा) के रूप में दुनिया में शोध के क्षेत्र में सबसे बड़े संस्थान के बतौर विकसित किया। इस अन्तरिक्षीय दौड़ के दौरान हुए प्रोद्योगिकीय विकास को कम करके नहीं आँका जा सकता। यह एक ऐसे युग के बतौर चिन्हित हुआ जब अमेरिका एक प्रोद्योगिकीय ताकत के रूप में और द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के बाद एक आर्थिक एवं राजनैतिक महाशक्ति के रूप में पुनर्संगठित हो सका। नाभिकीय ऊर्जा के दोहन और परिवहन, दोनों ही क्षेत्रों में, आज तक, नासा में हुए शोध कार्यों की वजह से कुछ सबसे मत्वपूर्ण आर. टी. डी. प्राप्त हुए हैं।
