La messa in circolazione, nel 2002, delle monete e dei biglietti in euro ha avuto un impatto psicologico decisivo. Il fatto che i prezzi dei beni e dei servizi siano fissati in euro, utilizzato ora da più dei due terzi della popolazione dell'UE, significa che i consumatori sono in grado di confrontare direttamente i prezzi da un paese all'altro.
