MEPs are calling for an early EU position on the Rio Conference. "We need to have a common EU approach by November as negotiations for the Rio Declaration are going to start in the spring of next year. The fact that a green economy need not mean de-industrialisation, but prosperity and employment, should encourage us Europeans", said the German MEP.

One year ago, the international community of states agreed in Rio de Janeiro that a green economy is one of the important tools for enabling people to develop sustainably in the context of poverty reduction. A Swiss delegation dispatched by the Federal Council and led by Ambassador Franz Perrez, Head of the International Affairs Division of the Federal Office for the Environment, also participated in the second round of negotiations in New York which ended on 4 May 2012.

The parties continue to work together in the fight against climate change. The EU fully supports South Africa's efforts to achieve successful outcomes at the international climate negotiations in Durban in November/December.
