研究者に転身後、土壌の微生物が生産する有用な物質の探索・研究を45年以上にわたり行ってきた。その間450種以上の化学物質を発見し、そのうち26種は薬として世界中の人々を救っている。今回ノーベル医学生理学賞授賞の対象となったのは、「エバーメクチン」という物質である。1974年に見つけた新種の細菌を共同研究相手であったメルク社に送ったところ、細菌が生産する物質がマウスの寄生虫を激減させることが確認された。動物実験を行い、エバーメクチンの効果を発見したウィリアム・C・キャンベル（アメリカのドルー大学名誉リサーチフェロー）は大村と共同受賞している。エバーメクチンから作られたイベルメクチンは、人間のオンコサカイアシス（別名河川盲目症。失明に至る感染症）や、リンパ系フィラリア症（象皮症と呼ばれる重度のむくみを引き起こす感染症）に効果がある。現在大村は、イベルワクチンの特許権を放棄しており、同ワクチンはWHOを通じて10億人以上に無償提供されてきた。また、動物薬として家畜の寄生虫駆除や感染予防にも用いられ、家畜を病気から守るという意味で人類の食糧確保にも貢献しており、大村の研究成果によって救われた人々の数は計り知れない。2014年にガードナー国際保健賞を、2015年に朝日賞を受賞。
