I leisurely thought about this off and on, that is until the 3/11 Tohoku earthquake. The devastation of the disaster left scars on us all, yet the volunteerism from not only within Japan but from other countries, really touched me showing me the goodheartedness of people.

初めてこの学校で４年目の生徒を教えることになった。敬語などを除く基本的な文法はだいたい導入済み。家族や食べ物、ファッションなどおなじみのトピックに関したプロジェクトもいろいろやってきた。でも、生徒たちは本当に日本語を使えるという実感をもっているか、という疑問は絶えずつきまとっていた。せっかく日本にいるのに、日本人との接触が少ないというのも気になっていた。

En mi primera visita al Kalahari decidí empeorar la elección de Túnez y me adentré con un Volkswagen Polo por caminos en los que algunos 4×4 tenían problemas. Esta vez pinchamos dos ruedas. El Kalahari es un imán, tiene alma. Un lugar en el que las manadas de springbook y de ñus se resguardan cuando el sol ya amenaza con devorarnos a todos; en el que los leones descansan atemorizados bajo las delgadas sombras; en el que ves guepardos cazar entre el polvo y en el que aquella primera noche, mientras tomaba un vino junto a mi cabaña, escuché en medio de aquella oscuridad ciega la risa de las hienas quebrar el cielo en dos. Me estremecieron aquellos gritos de vida que lanzaba el desierto. Otra vez la sensación de ser muy pequeño, esta vez con vida a mi alrededor. Nunca olvidaré aquellas noches.
