Asia still has immense development challenges, even though the continent has advanced in poverty reduction in the last years. According to the data of the Asian Development Bank, China managed to reduce the proportion of population below the poverty line from over 60 per cent in 1990 to around 15 percent in 2005.

科学者たちはカーボンサイクルと炭素の管理体制における相互依存性やフィードバックという特性を研究し、科学者同士が合意に達した共通の知識ベースを確立する必要がある 。その知識ベースは政策議論と行動を支え、地方から世界へ、そして地域レベルでの持続可能性へつながる統合的なガバナンス体制を育むことになる。様々な規模のカーボン・ガバナンスの課題をよりよく理解することはアジアにとって不可欠であるが、現時点ではあまり理解が進んでいない。そのような理解は、最適なカーボン・ガバナンスの全体的な構造を設計する際の重要な視点を与えてくれるだろう。この点に関するアジアでの将来的な研究は集成的である必要があり、カーボン・ガバナンスとその他の分野のガバナンスの相互連鎖を考慮に入れるべきだ。その他の分野のガバナンスには、例えば生物多様性の喪失や海洋酸性化といった環境問題に関連したガバナンスや、社会政策や経済政策といった環境とは直接関連しない政策分野のガバナンスがあるだろう。
