「細胞」の実験では、さまざまな「細胞」を宇宙で培養し、微小重力や地球上にはない宇宙放射線という環境が生体に与える影響について、分子・細胞レベルで解析して、その結果と地上との比較によって、これらの仕組みを解明する実験を行う計画です。例えば、植物の重力感受性の実験です。地上では、植物は重力を感じることによって、根が下に伸び、茎が上へと成長します。植物のどの細胞が重力を感受するのか、地上の実験による仮説はありますが、それを宇宙で実証します。植物の成長のしくみが分かれば、植物の生産効率化など、農業生産にも貢献できます。また、宇宙に長期滞在すると、骨量の減少や筋肉の萎縮がおきますが、骨の形成や筋肉の維持などの細胞レベルでの変化を調べます。これらの研究は、人間が宇宙で長期滞在する時の影響を軽減したり、地上においては、寝たきりによる筋萎縮や、高齢化による骨粗しょう症の予防などに役立ちます。
