クロスカントリーレースは、アントワープオリンピックの最後の陸上競技の種目でした。前日には、ハンネス・コレフマイネンがマラソンで優勝しており、フィンランド選手たちの中には、大会の佳境は過ぎたと感じている者も少なからずいるようでした。しかしながら、陸上団体戦のポイント獲得をめぐるフィンランドとスウェーデンの鬩ぎあいは続いており、クロスカントリーの成績の重要性は否めないものでした。肌寒い曇り空の下、51人の選手がスタートラインにひしと並びます。8kmのコースは、スタジオの周辺の自然道と野原を巡るものですが、さほどの高低差はありません。スタート直後から先頭グループには、パーヴォ・ヌルミ、ジョセフ・ギレモ、エリック・バックマンと主力選手が揃います。レースが進行するにつれ、緩みのないペースで走るヌルミは、確実に並走者の数を減らして行き、ゴールより3km手前の地点では、ギレモが足の痛みのため、棄権します。ヌルミはバックマンに50mの差をつけてスタジアムに向かいますが、バックマンはここからヌルミを追い上げ、ヌルミより先に入場します。しかしゴールより200mの地点でヌルミはスパートをかけ、軽々とバックマンを追い越し優勝します。同国のへイッキ・リーマタイネンが銅メダルを獲得し、テオドル・コスケンニエミが6位でゴールインすると、フィンランドは、スウェーデン23ポイント、イギリス21ポイントに対し、10ポイントという卓抜な成績で団体金メダルを獲得します。
