Following last weekend's government reshuffle, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has abolished the country's State Secretariat for the Digital Economy. Frédéric Couchet, head of France's Association for the Protection of Free Software, voices his disapproval at the decision in an interview with the weekly Le Nouvel Observateur: "The problem of politicians is that often they see no further than the end of their mandate. You can't expect a Nicolas Sarkozy who hopes to 'civilise the internet' or [his ministers] Frédéric Lefebvre and Nadine Morano to come up with a viable plan for the digital future, because they haven't got a clue. And the [governing party] UMP stands to pay the price in 2012. The digital natives will be old enough to vote and digital technology will play a key role in the campaign. But for now the only thing these young people see in government legislation is an attempt to criminalise their activities."
