It is clear, though, that this time the entire structure is future-oriented. Both the genesis of the Polish August, and August events itself (shipyard strikes in Gdansk - translator's note) had become in the film not so much a reckoning with the present, but rather an opening into a future, fraught with danger and suffering, but nonetheless fascinating. What evidence do we have of this? Well, the exceptional, lightning tempo of the production of Man of Iron has been remarked upon universally, both in the sense of the creative concept and of the technical execution (although, as a rule, our film industry is not famous for its technical execution!). It seems that this tempo has transformed the social status of the film. It was not merely a demonstration of an attitude towards recent events. It was also an opportunity to incidentally influence the changes initiated by those events.

Człowiek z marmuru był filmem o przeszłości. Nawet jeśli zawierał wątek współczesny, którego bohaterką była Krystyna Janda. (...) Człowiek z żelaza ma układ łudząco podobny. Obok wątku współczesnego zawiera warstwę wydarzeń z roku 1968, potem z roku 1970, a potem wiele różnych sekwencji z końca lat siedemdziesiątych, przygotowujących zryw roku 1980. Jest jednak jasne, że tym razem cała konstrukcja celuje w przyszłość. I geneza Sierpnia, i sam Sierpień stanowią nie tyle obrachunek z tym, co było, tylko raczej otwarcie na pełne niebezpieczeństw i cierpień, ale fascynujące jutro. Jakie są na to dowody? Otóż powszechnie zwracano uwagę, także za granicą, na wyjątkowe, błyskawiczne tempo realizacji Człowieka z żelaza, zarówno w sensie koncepcji twórczej, jak i technicznego wykonawstwa (choć nie jesteśmy kinematografią bijącą rekordy techniczne!). Otóż to tempo zmieniło status społeczny filmu. Jest on nie tylko zajęciem stanowiska wobec zdarzeń, które już zaszły. Ma on również szansę wtórnie wpłynąć na kształt przemian, zapoczątkowanych przez owe wydarzenia.
