«And do not be surprised how many bad Christians fill the Church, who take communion in the same altar, who loudly praise the bishop or priest, who speak about good morals, by whom is realized what He who has gathered us, foretold in the Psalm: I proclaimed, I spoke and they multiplied above the number. (Ps. 39:6) They can be with us in the Church at this time, but it will be impossible for them to be in the assembly of the saints that will take place after the resurrection. The present Church is like a threshing floor that has grain mixed with chaff, that is, the good and the bad together. After the judgment, nevertheless, it will have only the good without any bad. This threshing floor has the harvest sown by the Apostles, watered until the present by the good teachers who have succeeded them, and much subjected to threshing by the persecutions of the enemies, but- and it is only this that remains—still not purified by the last winnowing fork. He will come, nonetheless, the one about whom you pronounced in the symbol of faith: «From there, He will come to judge the living and the dead», and as the Gospel says, He will take the winnowing fork by his hand and He will clean his threshing floor; He will gather his wheat in the barn, while He will cast the chaff into an inextinguishable fire.

«E não vos admireis de que haja multidão de maus cristãos que enchem a Igreja, que comungam do altar e louvam em alta voz o Bispo ou o presbítero que prega os bons costumes. Cumpre-se, por meio deles, o que predisse, no Salmo, Aquele que nos congrega: Eu quisera, Senhor, publicá-los, mas são tantos, quem pode contá-los? (Sl 39,6). Podem estar conosco na Igreja do tempo presente, mas não poderão estar naquela assembleia de santos que existirá depois da ressurreição. A Igreja do tempo presente compara-se, pois, a uma eira que possui grãos misturados às palhas, que possui maus misturados aos bons, mas que há de ter, depois do juízo, somente bons sem quaisquer maus. Esta eira contém a messe, semeada pelos apóstolos, regada pelos bons doutores que os sucederam até o tempo presente, e não pouco triturada pela perseguição dos inimigos, porém –e isto é só o que lhe resta– ainda não purificada pelo último joeiramento. Chegará, pois, Aquele a respeito de quem recitastes no Símbolo da fé: «Donde há de vir a julgar os vivos e os mortos» e, conforme diz o Evangelho, Ele está com a pá na mão; ele vai limpar sua eira e recolher seu trigo no celeiro; mas a palha ele a queimará no fogo que não se apaga (Mt 3,12). Ouçam o que digo também os que foram batizados há mais tempo. Quem for grão, alegre-se com tremor, permaneça na eira, dela não se afaste. Não procure desprender-se, por sua conta, da palha, uma vez que, se desejar separar-se da palha desde já, não poderá permanecer na eira. E quando vier Aquele que separa sem erro, não levará ao celeiro o que não encontrar na eira».
