Responding to the question on who might be the most preferable presidential candidate at the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, Serzh Sargsyan said, “Armenia, and not only Armenia, is interested in the neighbors which have taken the democratic path of development. Thus, when it comes to a neighbor, especially to a partner in negotiations, Armenia in invariably interested in a democratic Azerbaijan. However if we disregard that fact for a moment, the answer to the question is the following: we’d rather see President Ilham Aliev win. We have been going through a tough and long process of negotiations, and if we outline the framework for the solution of the problem it will at least contain the public endorsement of the principles proposed by the Co-Chairs of the Minsk Group. They have been actively negotiated for the last four years. Certainly, I wouldn’t say that the process is very lively now, nevertheless a certain progress has been made, and if after the elections President Aliev is able to display political will and to rise above his fanatical Armenophobia, I believe that would be the most acceptable choice for us.”

На вопрос о том, кто, по мнению Президента, является наиболее предпочтительным для Армении кандидатом на предстоящих в Азербайджане президентских выборах, Серж Саргсян ответил: «Для Армении, и не только для Армении, предпочтительны соседи, движущиеся демократическим путем. Отсюда вывод, что в качестве соседа, в особенности в качестве партнера на переговорах, для нас однозначно предпочтителен демократический Азербайджан. Но если это обстоятельство отложить в сторону, ответ на вопрос таков: для нас, вероятно, самым выгодным было бы, если бы победил действующий Президент Ильхам Алиев. Мы прошли, хоть и трудный, но долгий переговорный путь. И почти очерчен путь решения проблемы, хотя бы публичное принятие предложенных сопредседателями Минской группы принципов. Вокруг них уже четыре года мы ведем активные переговоры. Прямо сейчас я бы не сказал, что переговорный процесс проходит активно, но, тем не менее, мы прошли довольно большой путь, и если после выборов Ильхам Алиев сможет проявить волю и подняться над этой его манией армянофобии, я думаю, для нас самый приемлемый и предпочтительный вариант этот».
